What is it? St. John’s Wort, a perennial plant with bright yellow flowers, is native to many areas of the world, including Europe and the U.S. It is most abundant in southern Oregon and northern California. Its traditional use can be traced back to ancient Greece where it was used to treat poisonous bites from reptiles and was thought to ward off evil spirits. Christian folklore thought the plant would protect one’s loved ones from death. Today, St. John’s Wort continues to enjoy widespread use in Europe and is very popular in the U.S. for maintaining a positive mood, especially during seasonal changes. |
